Mrs. Carrie Mae (Welch) Hibberts

Carrie Mae (Welch) Hibberts, 98, passed peacefully on December 8, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama. Carrie was born in Anniston, Alabama, on November 10, 1922. She was the daughter of Marshall and Carrie Welch. Carrie was baptized at the Glen Addie Baptist Church as a child and was a longtime member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Anniston. The past 20 years while living in Mobile, she was a member of Springhill Baptist Church. Carrie loved and adored her family, who were only second to her love of the Lord. She loved reading her Bible and she also loved politics. Her first two questions to a new acquaintance were always, “Do you know Jesus?” and “Are you Republican or Democrat?” She loved our president and attended his first campaign rally in Mobile at age 93. Carrie was well traveled. She and her husband “Slim” traveled the United States with his work, and also vacationed in Europe and the Holy Land. One of the highlights of their travels was witnessing the opening of the Wailing Wall in 1967 when the Jewish people gained control after the Six-Day War. She also recounted many times of an uneasy premonition she had while traveling with a group of college students in London in 1974. The group planned to visit the Tower of London. As the group was to depart, Carrie felt led to stay behind. A couple of hours later, the news reported that the Tower of London had been attached, injuring many people and killing one. She always attributed this experience to God’s divine intervention in her life. Carrie loved the rain. She often smiled when she retold stories of being able to spend the day with her husband because he did not go to work when it rained. It was God’s way of giving them time together. They would take long rides through the countryside and just enjoy each other’s company. Carrie loved to sing and dance. Many family gatherings included singing gospel songs around the piano. As late as three weeks ago, she would invite the residents at Crowne Healthcare, where she lived, to raise their hands and “dance” in their wheelchairs. She was the life of every party! Carrie Hibberts is preceded in death by her husband, William L. “Slim” Hibberts; sons, Rodney L. Hibberts and Van G. Hibberts; great-grandson, Stewart Huntington "Hunter" Baines; parents, Marshall F. and Carrie Boyles Welch; sister, Dorothy Welch Wade; and brothers, Paulie F. Welch, Tommie H. Welch, Robert Welch, William W. Welch, Marshall F. Welch, Jr., Charles Edward Welch, and Howard A. Welch. Survivors include her son, William R. Hibberts (Jan) of Mobile, AL; her daughter, Susan Hibberts Hicks (Jim) of Winnweiler, Germany; grandchildren, Anne Hibberts, Will Hibberts (Ashley), Katharine Hibberts Quero (José), Adam Hibberts (Mary), Grant Hibberts, Holly Hibberts Shelton (Simon), Liza Hicks, Jay Hicks (Rachel), Greg Hibberts, Emily Hibberts Kennedy (Brian), and David Hibberts (Elizabeth); great-grandchildren, Mallory Baines, Helen Hibberts, John Hibberts, Kate Shelton, Sam Shelton, Jake Shelton, Abby Hicks, Olivia Hicks, Penelope Hicks, Charlee Hicks, Smith Hibberts, and Conor Kennedy; five great-great grandchildren, Chloe Baines, Claire Baines, Alonna Andrews, Blayton Baines, and Aubrey Lee; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews--all of whom she also loved and adored. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Crowne Healthcare in Mobile, Alabama for their steadfast care of our mother and grandmother. A private graveside service at Forest Lawn Gardens, in Anniston, Alabama, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice.
