Mr. Paul Garrett

Paul Allen Garrett, Sr., 79, passed away peacefully at home on August 30th, 2021. A native of Birmingham and resident of Mobile since 2001, he was preceded in death by his parents, Wylie D. Garrett and Jewell Bryant Garrett; and his brother, Jerrell Garrett. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Harriett “Snookie” Sims Garrett, his sons, Paul Allen Garrett, Jr. (Cheryl), Casey Sims Garrett, Russell Wayne Garrett, all of Mobile, and Barry Taylor Garrett (Carol) of Collierville, Tennessee, and grandchildren, Chase Garrett, Madison Garrett, Meredith Garrett, Grayson Garrett, Carys Elise Garrett, Lindsey Smith, and Jordan Smith, and is also survived by other nieces and nephews. Paul was a graduate of Ensley High School, Birmingham, in 1959. A college scholarship athlete, he graduated from Mississippi Delta Junior College in 1961 and Delta State University in 1963. As an educator, coach, and mentor, he served as football and baseball coach at Bessemer High School, and as head baseball coach at Columbia High School, Decatur, Georgia. Later, he and his family resided in Collierville, Tennessee, as he began a career as representative for national companies specializing in sports equipment. After moving to Mobile, he was owner of University Sporting Goods. Always a coach and avid sportsman, he was committed to the sports activities of his four sons and fostered their involvement in coaching others. Following his retirement, he joined Roberts Brothers Realtors to remain active and involved in business and was employed currently. Paul was a lifelong Christian, an active Sunday school teacher, a church leader in Bible studies and charity work, with all congregations he joined. As part of the Dayspring ministries, he was involved especially with spiritual enrichment and McKemie Place Women’s Shelter. Visitation was held at 11 A. M., Thursday, September 2nd, 2021 at Dayspring Baptist Church followed by funeral services at noon. Pallbearers included: Christian Laird, Grayson Garrett, Brian Hudson and Daniel Dennis. Honorary Pallbearers were Chase Garrett, Al Sessions, Lee Lucas, Mabry Herndon, Bill Ralph, Troy Bell and Bill Gunkel. Private interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL. For their many acts of generosity, outreach, and prayers during his illness, the family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Dayspring congregation and to the staff of Roberts Brothers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul’s memory to Dayspring Baptist Church, 2200 Cody Road, S., Mobile, AL 36695.
