Mr. Quency Antonio Cook

Quency Cook, age 76, of Mobile, Alabama, passed away suddenly on January 18, 2023 of natural causes at his home. Quency was born on March 18, 1946 to Quinton and Esther Cook in Mobile, AL. Interestingly, his lineage was traced to the Poarch Creek Indians. In 1962, at 16 years of age, he received accolades from the Governor of Alabama for his service as a citizen soldier during the Berlin Conflict. In 1963, he attained the level of black belt in Judo and worked with the YMCA as a Judo/Karate instructor to teach the Mobile police force the arts. He won a trophy during the AAU Judo Championship in New Orleans for Most Outstanding Novice. The Mobile Press Register remarked that his exceptional talent led him to jump two belt grades at one time. He won multiple awards in Judo and instructed for many years. Later in the 1960’s, Quency went on to join the Army. He fell in love with Annie June Butler, and they married in 1965. They were stationed in Georgia, California, and ultimately settled down in his hometown of Mobile, AL where they bought a home to raise their family. Prior to his honorable discharge from the Army, he did a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. In 1970, Quency obtained his GED. The same year, he went on to become a certified Peace Officer and graduated from the Mobile Police Academy. In addition to his police work, in 1970 he joined the Alabama National Guard to continue service to his country. He obtained Sergeant First Class in 1972. He departed from the police force in 1976. Quency went on to operate in various sales jobs, where he won awards for his sales abilities. He became certified in operating trucks and farm equipment in 1983. He dabbled in car sales, coffee sales, and bread routes. You name it, he probably sold it. In 1985, he even completed classes in professional ice cream sales. He was a very likable guy and could strike up a conversation with clients or with anyone he met. He was a kind man with a cheerful disposition. He was known to go around the house singing classic TV commercial jingles even into his senior years. Earlier in life, he was one who loved to travel. He was always wanting to go somewhere for the next adventure. When his kids were living at home, he would always be up for a board game or cards no matter how tired he was. His specialties were playing pool, chess, and checkers. He was a bit of a shark! Anyone who ever played him met up with his skill. He had a nickname for everyone. Quency was an avid weather watcher. He loved to be up on current conditions and would regularly call family across the country to chat and give them updates on the weather in their area. In his latter years, he settled into working full-time security. Quency loved to get out of the house and keep busy. In his spare time, he routinely mowed several lawns around his neighborhood. He was a hard worker, and he worked a full shift the day he fell ill and passed away. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, many loving relatives, and friends. He was active on social media and loved interacting with his family and friends online. It brought him joy to keep up with everyone. His passing softens the hearts of all who loved him, and his memory falls gently on our minds as the imperfections fade. He had a childlike love for life, and one of his greatest pleasures was to simply be included. One never knew what he would do or say next. He would keep everyone on their toes. Quency did not hold on to hurts. As his wife said, if they ever had a spat and were on the outs with each other, he would get up the next day and be “the same old Quency” as if nothing ever happened. Family reported that in recent years, he had taken steps to right wrongs in his life by reaching out to say he was sorry. He left a lasting legacy through his children, without which there would be much less light and love on Earth. There will be no public services, however those who wish to honor him may make donations to their church of his choice.
