Mrs. Sandra Joy Taylor

A Multi-Pulitzer Prize nominee passed peacefully at home on April 23, 2025; Sandra Joy Baxley Taylor (born January 15, 1946) of Mobile, AL; an Alabama writer/author/editor/publisher was re-united with her husband of 44 years, Tom Taylor, former Executive Editor in Chief of The Mobile Press Register and her parents, Lois G McCarter, Raymond Johnson and JC McCarter and two children Sean Taylor (wife Ann) and Julia Taylor Lolley. Ms. Taylor graduated from W.P. Davidson High School in 1964 and graduated with an A.B. in Journalism with a minor in English from the University of Alabama in 1968. She was a writer for The Birmingham News and The Mobile Press Register, being a trailblazer in her line of work, always finding the most controversial stories and getting right to the bottom of them at all costs. She and her husband were the first “white” members of the Mobile NAACP, embracing our new integration laws when it was daring in this area. Just one of Ms. Taylor’s articles was recently featured on CNN in The People vs the KKK, as she worked hand in hand with Michael Figures to uncover “dirty” cops in Mobile, AL, after the last lynching of Michael Donald in 1983. Ms. Taylor was the author of many books on Alabama politicians; “F.O.B. The Incredible Story of F.O.B. James”, “Me and George” about George C Wallace, and “Faulker, Jimmy That Is”. She had her own publishing company, Greenberry Publishing, in which she edited many books, such as “The Massacre at Fort Mims” and recipe books such as “From Collards to Caviar”. Mr. and Ms. Taylor were part of the Old Mobilian Society, and they will both be very missed by many friends. She is survived by one brother, Cheyney McCarter (wife Jimmi) of Hendersonville, TN; three sons, Stephen Taylor (wife Denise), Steven Baxley, and Tommy Taylor; and one daughter, Samantha Baxley. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Randi Gladson (husband Joel) of Russellville, TN; Taylor Lolley of Tennessee, Stephanie Borne (husband Dustin) of Denham Springs, LA; Ashley Stephenson (husband Donald) of London, England; Joseph Taylor (wife Laura) of Mobile, AL; and Jocelyn Lee Taylor and Kaeley Louise Taylor of Idaho Falls, ID., and seven great grandchildren; niece, Darla M Hileman (husband Chris) of Mobile, AL and nephew, Zac McCarter (wife Katie)of Nashville, TN. Her pallbearers are Steven Baxley, Tommy Taylor, Cheyney McCarter, Chris Hileman, Brian Pelligrini, and Chris Levesque. Visitation is 11 am-1 pm at Cottage Hill Memorial Funeral Home in Mobile, AL, on May 13 th , 2025, with services beginning at 1 pm and graveside to follow.
